“The ERC gives me the opportunity to conduct basic research on Alzheimer’s disease.”
With this ERC grant, I’m initiating a research project that I’ve had in mind for years. Until now I hadn’t been able to secure sufficient funding, because my subject did not quite fit the profile of other calls for proposals. I’ve been working on Alzheimer’s disease for some time, and I wanted to explore a promising lead, which could find diagnostic and therapeutic applications over the long term. Most Alzheimer’s research focuses on molecules that can be tested rapidly, which is not sufficient for developing large-scale responses to this public health issue. My idea, much farther upstream, is to study the molecular interactions between zinc ions, copper ions and the peptide amyloid. At the interface of chemistry and biology, this investigation could pave the way for effective treatments. In other words, the ERC gives me the opportunity to conduct basic research on Alzheimer’s disease. It’s an entirely different approach to research!
